Self-healing metal wire
We proposed a self-healing metal wire using metal nanoparticles. The cracked wire is covered by metal nanoparticle solution. Applying a voltage to the cracked wire, the nanoparticles near the crack experience a dielectrophoresis force due to the electric field generated in the region of the crack only. The cracked wire is connected by the nanoparticles trapped in the crack.

We proposed MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) scanner with large mirror region ratio and malti-axis scanning. We used a single pair of beams with different resonant modes. The MEMS scanner can be driven by a single superposed signal of three resonant frequencies.

The male butterfly Morpho didius displays a brilliant blue color with a less viewing angle dependence. It is known that this coloring does not come from pigments but from the surface micro/nano-structure in the wing. Structural-coloring based on a multilayer interference has a viewing angle dependence, but the structural-coloring of Morpho didius has a less viewing angle dependence. By analyzing the coloring mechanisms, we achieved a structural-color display with a less viewing angle dependence. We have fabricated the structures which display different bright structural-colors.

Magnetic self-assembly
We have developed a three-dimensional (3-D) microstructure assembly using an external magnetic field. An external magnetic field perpendicular to a substrate lifts up a hinged structure due to the shape magnetic anisotropy. This method can assemble 3-D structures from 2-D structures similar to “Origami (paper folding)”.

We have proposed an integration method of heterogeneous MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) structures by using liftoff and stamping transfer methods with a PDMS (poly-dimethylsiloxane) sheet. This is a strong method for assembling 3-D structures, integrating heterogeneous materials, and fabricating flexible devices.
